Geometrical  Jewelry?  Me??? (1)

I would like to share with you
my reflections about my new
geometric collection.

As I’ve already hinted in the title,
I surprised myself with this collection,
because, as a Nature lover, and a “veteran” hiker,
my inspiration derives from biomorphic forms,
which means soft, round and twisted lines.

But then, there are also geometric forms in Nature, like-

Although, I admit, I had not thought about them

when I made this collection…

This time, I was influenced by my other love –
ART, and more specifically - Contemporary Art.

Two great artists in the beginning of the 20^th century
focused on geometric forms, and left a significant legacy,
influencing following artists.
(Of course, you would say: “I know, she is going to write
about Pablo Picasso and Cubism…” Not this time!)

Iceland: Mother Earth Doesn’t Rest

Well,
this is  not going to be just another  travel report
(one of hundreds online),
but sporadic, and definitely personal reflections
on my recent trip to Iceland:

 “Earth’s Inner  Workings”

This is the place where I felt very close to our planet!
The soil is “raw”, “hot”,- “ just coming out from the “oven”…
In geological time, the lava  eruptions of the last 200 years,
not to mention 20 years ago,
are happening now, as we speak!

The soil is black, almost moonlike.
Fresh green felt-like moss, which is spread over
miles and miles, softens the harsh and sober look of
the black lava “desert”.

Two tectonic plates meet here,
the North-American and the Euro-Asian plates.

It is not  virtual!
This is the only place in the world, where this meeting,
or clash, happens on land.
Seeing a natural phenomenon like this, is exciting!

This is where it happens:

Flowers and Leaves:

The flowers are so tiny and low (because of the strong winds).
They grow in “colonies”, like dots ,
like islands of color, joy and life in  the black lifeless,
and somewhat  frightening lava.

And the leaves:
(you already know that I love leaves…)
They are so “human” with their furry “ hair”
which protects them from the wind and the cold.

Knitting:

This is typical shelf in a supermarket!

People still knit here!
All, well, almost all the woolen stuff in the shops
is handmade.
Beautiful !
Is this what the Icelanders do during their long “winter’s sleep”?

This is me knitting the collective scarf, in one of the hostels.
Remembering old times…

And finally -

Icebergs:

How can I ignore them?
These mysterious things!

An iceberg is a combination of amazing colors,
which in fact, are “time capsules”.
Stormy winters, dry seasons, lava eruptions,
all are “commemorated” in the layers of colors.

Seeing it,  made me feel like I was  experiencing
“The Sublime”.
Me, the tiny fragile human being,
in front of the giant natural powers…

It also reminded me the romantic movement
of the 19th century

Where are the Leaves?

Last Saturday I trekked in the Carmel Mountains, near Haifa.
(I have being trekking with a group for the last 26 years, once a month.
See  the board of “My Treks” in Pinterest)

We walked through the burnt forest, which was destroyed two years ago,
in a fire that lasted for three days. The view was incredible.
If only 43 people were not burnt alive, it would be even more romantic…

 

It was like walking in an upside down  world :

The  grey-brown colors of the ground were placed up against the clear
blue sky, whereas the green of the usual tree-tops, was placed on the ground .

It reminded  me of  the Romantic  North- European Painting
at the end of the 19^th century.

But in contrast to this somber painting, the view was full of joy and life
as the spring blossoming was in its peak.

 

The  annual  red wild flowers which  are  indigenous to Israel were in full bloom.
In fact, it is officially recognized worldwide that Israel has the most  red flowers of these kinds.    

                                    

          

                  But  where were the leaves???

                                   

I would like to introduce my leaves jewel collection,
 as a tribute to the dead trees of the Carmel  Mountain.

We all love trees. We adore their size, their shape, color, even their age
 but we hardly look at their leaves – their smallest component…
 The leaves in my jewelry are the theme.  They are collected from very common trees ,many of which we see along the sidewalks, and in public gardens .
After drying them, they are coated by Sterling Silver  in an electroforming  process which gives them their hardness and preserves their original texture.

In fact, I take the  leaves  out of their original context and from being
small and ignored elements,  I turn them into  autonomous object,
beautiful as they are for themselves - I give them another “life”.
Since they are so trivial, they even can be understood as a metaphor for other trivial and ignored things around us – that we can easily enjoy!!!... 

If you have an idea of a leaf   jewel , I will be more than glad to cooperate.
