They have a romantic aura, and they remind me of vintage times.

The story behind the drop

.I’ve recently made is different

:Their process began by chance

Some beautiful small drop-shaped gems

,lay gracefully in my gem stock

.waiting years for my inspiration

:Out of the blue it came

I built for them standard drop-shaped bezels

,but – well – I had to make some surprising twist -

,so, I set them diagonally

               , “unstable"             

                         , “unbalanced”                  

                                    ...somewhat intriguing

“GEOMETRIC” FLOWER

I started making geometric jewelry about two years ago
(see my post - http://jewelrybyvita.blogspot.com/2015/11/)
and I am still fascinated by geometric shapes.

Before presenting my new pentagonal variations,
I’d like to share with you my thoughts
about my “geometric obsession”.

In the 1920s, a group of German psychologists developed theories
about how people perceive the world around them.
Their theory was based on the human inclination to identify
structures, logic, and patterns in the world.
 It helps people to make sense of the world,
to understand their surroundings.
They called these theories “The Gestalt principles”.

The basic geometric shapes are easy to percept.
When we see them, we feel “calm”, “safe”, “stable”,
because we identify their generic form.

I broke the rules:

I “undermined” these feelings!

My pentagons are not accurate and not balanced.
Their “ribs” are uneven in size, and not absolutely straight.

Moreover - the way I combine them,
looks “sporadic” and “accidental”.
They don’t fit together!
It makes a sort of impression that they are
provisional, imbalanced, and accidental…

This dissonance intrigues us, and “catches” our eye…
It makes the jewelry interesting…

As you probably realize,
I recently visited this amazing country,
which is so different from my Mediterranean Israel…
I am not going to analyze anything!
There are “ton” of serious researches on Japan.
I’d just like to share with you my reflections,
being only  a “pop-up” visitor.

*       There are no trash cans in the streets!!!
Yet, the streets, the  train stations, everywhere
are totally clean!
(There are trash cans only in train stations
and in the many astonishing toilets spread everywhere)
The Japanese take their trash home.
What self-discipline!

* People, who catch a cold, wear masks in public.
   Being a goldsmith, I usually wear it when working,
   How thoughtful they are of others!
   and I know how inconvenient it feels!

  *   The world-wide “cellular plague “
    is prevailing in Japan.
   Surly, everyone is busy

         with this wonderful/awful device.
   But – nobody speaks by it
   in public!

*     Whenever there are two people waiting,
there is a QUE:
One stands exactly behind the other.
Not before him, not beside him…
For us – Israelis,
(together with some other countries…)
it is admirable!

 *  There is a surprising contradiction between
the Japanese sense of beauty and esthetics,
and their sensitivity for colors (kimonos, food, gardens),
and the grayness of their houses,
especially in suburbs and in the countryside.
Their houses are surprisingly monochrome gray from the outside.

  


*Japanese beauty everywhere: Kimonio, Food, Sewer hole covres.

 Here are my favorites:

The town of Kanazawa -
Because of its most beautiful gardens,
(at least among those I've seen).
and because of  its esthetic orientation.
Here is an example -
This is what you first see, when you  get off the train:

 The gate of  the train station; Japanese teapot

Naoshima, Teshima and Inujima the Art islands.

I was impressed with the wonderful contribution
of the great industrial and commercial companies,
who financed the building of museums
and the purchasing of  the best art-works
from all-over the world, including local art.
I was excited  with the combination

of the wild and amazing landscape of the islands
and Art!

Last, but not least,
is the great organization of volunteer tour-guiding: English-speaking volunteers helped us to manage

      in the efficient but “monstrous” traffic system (especially in Tokyo),
      and took us to places we requested.Thanks to them, we got answers to the many things we did not understand.Thanks to them, we did not fill as being  in a bubble,the way a tourist usually feels. They did a great job.

                         Valentine’s Gifts?

This time, I am making an exception:
I am going to write about my family.

To be more specific -
about the jewels I’ve made
for the four grown-up women
in my family, for Valentine’s Day:
[Is this day is dedicated only to romantic lovers?...]

I feel blessed and lucky:
-  I’m lucky to have two daughters and two daughters-in-law;
- I’m lucky to be able to give them my hand-made gifts;
- I’m lucky that they love them
  (At least they say so…)

My eldest daughter loves earrings.
She has long curly hair,
so I’ve made her long earrings,
which were selected from my listings at my ETSY shop :

My younger daughter DOES NOT like jewelry!

The only jewel she wears
is a ring I made her
long a time ago.
So, I made her another ring…
She has a big palm with chubby fingers,
so I’ve made a dramatic piece ,
with a big raw Aqua Marine stone,
held by five “arms” of solid gold:

My elder daughter-in-law
is an elegant lady who adores jewelry.
She asked for a bracelet.
As I am now in my “geometric period”,
I designed a bracelet
which is composed of three attached elements:
A ring, a chain of small pentagons,
and a rectangular bracelet:

Last ( certainly not least), I designed for
my younger daughter-in-law
a long statement pendant
which will fit
her wide long dresses she wears:
