How to Store Jewelry (post no. 4)

After we had properly stored
silver and gold  jewels,
it  is time to talk about
Jewelry with gems :
Water colors Necklace and Pendant with Fluorite, Amethyst and Amazonite
We have to take into consideration,
that the open air causes changes
on certain gems:
(Aren’t we all influenced by it???
 For better and for worse…)
I‘ll mention here the most popular stones:

 http://www.etsy.com/listing/90669799

Turquoise –
Its color turns in the open air
to a sort of yellowish-light green.
It does not change its quality
and more than that  -
some  think it is more beautiful
 (like me for instance…)
Here is an example of Turquoise earrings
 from my Etsy shop:

Coral –

Its color tends to fade in strong light.
Here is an example of Coral jewels
 from my ETSY shop:

 Pearls:
They  react  the opposite way
 to light and open air:
 They need to “breath”…
They have to be kept either
 in open air (!)
 or in a “breathing” wrap,
like paper, cloth or leather bags.
Otherwise they will “die”
i.e. they will ‘lose’ their special
 “pearlite” brightness and their
color will  become matt and yellowish.
Here is pearl jewels
  taken from my ETSY shop:

That is for today.

HOW TO STORE JEWELS? (post no. 3)

Hi,

I would like to share with you some tips
about storing Silver, Gold and Gems,
as well as costum jewelry or accessories.

There are some “do’s and don’ts”
concerning the materials of the jewels:

Accessory  jewels (beautiful as they are),
usually are made of materials like plastic,
metal alloys, high standard crystal glass (like Swarovski),
or cheap glass.
This kind of jewelry, you can store in the open air.
They are reachable, visible and
add to the atmosphere of the room.
That’s what I did when I was young,
but I learned my lesson…
You have  to clean the dirt and dust off that jewelry,
an unnecessary and annoying action,
which can also cause  damage…
Which  inevitably brings us to the conclusion
that it is better to store jewelry in a closed container.
Silver and Gold jewelry are to be stored
in a closed place,as the metals react
to temperature changes
by widening and shrinking.
This may cause a “metal fatigue”
and finally break or crack the item.

Gold is more stable but still you have to shine and clean it.

As for Silver- all kinds of Silver alloys –
(the 925 Sterling Silver is the most concentrated,
and  most common), –they tend to blacken
in the open air, and become oxidized.
Since most of us like the Silver
bright and shiny, keeping Silver jewels
in a closed place will slow  down this process.
(There are jewels which have been intentionally
oxidized by the designer).
Here is an example of an intentionally
oxidized piece from my ETSY shop:
Turquoise, Zircon, Garnet, Leather and Silver Necklace - "Carnation Bouquet"
https://www.etsy.com/listing/90430474/turquoise-zircon-garnet-leather-and

And here is the same  piece in its burnished version:
Onyx, Hematite and Silver Beaded Necklace in Black and White with a Carnation Pendant - "Black Carnation"

That is for today.

I would be delighted to answer questions
and help wherever possible!

Happy Holidays .

How to Make Your Birthday Extra Special?

Today , the15th  of December, is my birthday!

How does an average woman like me celebrate her birthday?

- Receiving  flowers/gifts ;

-Going out for dinner with or without /theatre/movie ;

And that is it !

Do I remember my past  birthdays ? No!

They were more or less alike…

Except   one   birthday  I will never  forget!

I very much want to share this one with  you :

It was a   present   from me to myself : A trip to Burma.

(Relax, and don’t   sign out, as I am not going to tell the whole story!

Just about my birthday night)

So there we were – three  bold grandmothers,

experienced- trekkers , on a self-planned trip.

During the trip, we made a trek (with a local  guide ) to the

villages  of  the northern mountains.

Here are the three of us, in the trek, under a Budhi  tree,

( the Buddhist  holy tree).

We ate in the villagers’ houses, dressed   in  their
festive costumes, and took part in a local wedding.

Then we made a “ Buddhist  pilgrimage” ,

by climbing 1000  or so mud -stairs,

 to a Buddhist shrine.

At sunset, we arrived:

It was an overwhelming  spot,  on “the top of the world”,

with a breathtaking view.

(no pictures as it was getting dark…)

It was  freezing  cold…

The monks invited us to get warm near the fire they had lit.

This was a  very  funny situation:

We were standing  and  trembling  in one side of the fire,

and  the monks were doing the same on the opposite  side

of the fire.

We could not talk to  them  so we   giggled

all the while making body gestures to each other…

But the night, my  birthday  night,  was the highlight of this trek:

We  slept  with eight  Buddha  sculptures,
watching over us.
They were   decorated   with small  green blinking lights,
and we  were lying under  their feet .

And there was another  living creature  watcher over us:

A mouse, which every once in a while

was  crossing his territory, putting us on alert…

That was my birthday night, the 15th of December :

 Funny and  weird…
